team: implementation
The implementation goals of SacDoc were simple: use
free and open source software and commodity computer hardware to keep costs down (remember, I was funding this out of my own pocket), keep the on-site requirements
thin so that program sites could use existing (often legacy) computers, and keep the focus on physician productivity and patient respect.
In retrospect, the most important implementation decision to date was to fly under the radar, developing the system on our own time using donated equipment. That allowed us to keep the project focused and unencumbered with bloat and committee-based designs. It is a system developed entirely by and for the people who use and benefit from it, free from the agenda of a government or for-profit supporter.
The implementation team started out, of course, with only me. With passing time, the team has grown and contracted as various colleagues and co-workers have contributed feedback, support, and expertise to the project as they had resources available and coinciding goals. In addition, thousands of members of the community of open source software developers have contributed in ways too large to measure.
